What's Measured:

Total Cholesterol: Overall cholesterol levels in the bloodstream.

LDL (Low-Density Lipoprotein): Often referred to as "bad cholesterol", high levels can lead to plaque buildup in arteries.

HDL (High-Density Lipoprotein): Known as "good cholesterol", it helps remove LDL from the bloodstream.

Triglycerides: A type of fat found in the blood, influenced by diet and overall health.

VLDL (Very Low-Density Lipoprotein): Carries triglycerides to tissues.

Cholesterol/HDL Ratio: A calculation indicating the balance between good and bad cholesterol.

When to Test:

Routine Screening: It's recommended, especially for adults over 20, to test every 4-6 months.

Family History: Those with a family history of high cholesterol or heart-related diseases might need to test more frequently.

Existing Health Conditions: People with conditions like diabetes or hypertension.

Lifestyle Changes: After making significant changes to diet or exercise routines.

Medication: If you are on cholesterol-lowering medications, periodic testing might be needed.

Fasting Requirement:

You must be fasting which means no food or drinks except water should be consumed for 12 hours before collecting the sample.

Follow your doctor’s advice on fasting, especially if you have health conditions that require attention.

Symptoms:

High cholesterol doesn't typically show direct symptoms, but over time, it can lead to conditions with symptoms such as:

Coronary Artery Disease: Chest pain or angina, and shortness of breath.

Stroke: Sudden numbness or weakness, especially on one side of the body, or sudden confusion/trouble speaking.

Peripheral Artery Disease: Pain or numbness in the legs.
